Energy Saving Tips This Autumn

30th September 2022

With the cost of energy increasing more than ever before, we’re all feeling the crunch. But there are actually some clever ways you can save on energy – and your bills – over the autumn and winter period. Today, the team at Falcon Housing Association in Seaham shares some energy saving tips on cutting down and saving money.

Lower your thermostat

Just reducing it by a few degrees can make all the difference, and stop bills spiralling. In fact, Money Supermarket suggests that knocking it down just 1 degree could save you a whopping £75 per year. And watch how long you’re keeping the heating on, too – an hour here and there when it’s coldest can help warm your home in minutes and prevent the need to have it on all day.

Seal any drafts

Is the cold wind getting in? Or is your lovely warm air getting out? Having gaps around doors and windows can mean hot air is escaping and you’ve got the heating on more (or higher) to compensate. If you’re a tenant of ours and think there might be some gaps to look into, let us know.

Hack your radiator

Probably one of the most underrated energy saving tips, but did you know that placing a thin sheet of tin foil behind your radiator (dull side against the wall) can help with heating? That’s because it reflects heat back into your home, rather than it being absorbed into the walls. Experts also suggest bleeding radiators regularly with a key, to release trapped air and help keep them working effectively.

Use your appliances wisely

Are you guilty of leaving the TV on standby, or running the dishwasher or washing machine on long (and hot!) cycles? Being a little more economical with your appliances can save a bundle on your energy. For instance, washing at a lower temperature; switching appliances off at the plug; boiling only a cup at a time in the kettle.

Look at your lightbulbs

Modern, LED lightbulbs are much more energy-efficient than traditional alternatives. Longer-lasting, more durable and offering brighter lighting, they can use up to 75% less energy and last up to 25x longer.
