Independence With Supported Living
Every adult has the right – and deserves the opportunity – to live as independent a life as possible. But what that means, and how that looks to you, can be very different from the next person. It’s about finding a balance and ensuring your needs are met while your independence is fully supported – and that’s something that Falcon Housing Association C.I.C (FHA) proudly helps with. To learn about finding independence with supported living, read on.
1. Create the right supported living environment
A supportive, independence-building environment can differ between people and needs. So, it’s important to think about the type of accommodation you need for your own independence. It could be accommodation with adjustments made, like adding handrails, changing handles and taps or adapting a doorway.
2. Arrange the right support
Nobody should feel shy, anxious or embarrassed about asking for support – especially if it helps you lead a fulfilling, independent life. Again, the support in place should be tailored to you and your needs. So for example, you might need a carer to pop in and help with daily chores and tasks. Or, you might like a chaperone if you’re out and about. It might even be that you need someone to drive you to an appointment somewhere or arrange transport on your behalf.
3. Build a sense of community
If you live independently – and especially if you live alone – supported living can really benefit you to build a network for socialising and support. Being part of a community is important for anyone, and can help you take big steps towards becoming more independent. That might take shape as living in shared housing, or in accommodation near others. Our experts at FHA will support you in finding the right home for you and your needs.
4. Focus on you
Your needs may change and flex throughout your life, meaning what works for you now might not work tomorrow or the next day. Tuning into what you need can help you plan the right supported living accommodation and environment. So if you need to make any adjustments to your supported living housing, you can arrange it with the team at FHA.
