Home Security Tips For Independent Living

20th June 2019

So you’ve got a lovely new home, but you need to make sure you’re safe and sound inside. Feeling safe, confident, and comfortable in your new independent living space is really important to being able to relax. Here are some of our security tips for you or a loved one that is considering independent living.

Home safety!

  • Always lock your front door and take your keys out with you, even if you are just going to the shops quickly. Burglary and home invasions can happen really quickly, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.
  • Close and lock the windows if you are leaving your property to stop people gaining access to your independent living space.
  • Don’t hide a spare door key in obvious places like under a doormat or plat pot by the door, because intruders will always check these places.
  • Don’t place valuable possessions near windows, because these will be easy to burglars to grab if they gain access to your space.

Bogus house callers

  • Use your door-chain when answering the door.
  • Don’t invite anyone in unless you know them, trust them, or are aware they are coming to visit your property.
  • Don’t let the person pressure you into letting them into your property, a genuine house caller will be patient.
  • If you doubt their intentions or are suspicious, don’t let them in. Contact a member of your care team or loved one.

Bogus workmen

These people will try to perform unnecessary repairs and amends to your home, and they can be very persistent and convincing. If a workman tells you that you need repairs, politely tell them that you will seek other quotes.
