FHA is a registered provider that supports vulnerable people to live in a safe, supportive and independent environment in Seaham through specialist supported housing. FHA wants all vulnerable adults to live as independent and fulfilling a life as possible – whatever this looks like to you. If you’re worried about a vulnerable adult, especially across the Christmas period, try these tips below. For specialist support, FHA can step in – just get in touch with our team.
1. Keep in touch with an isolated older person
England and Wales have an ageing population, and the effects of coronavirus on the elderly have left many vulnerable adults more isolated and vulnerable than ever before. Many charities – including Age UK – run telephone befriending services where you can call an older person and offer some companionship. Or, you can start on your own street. Are there any older people who might benefit from you popping in for a cup of tea and a chat?
2. Help support vulnerable adults to live independently
Do you have a friend or loved one who you’d like to help with living independently? Perhaps they are an older person, and it’s the first time they’ve lived on their own. Or they might be a younger person just moving out of the family home. Whatever it is, you can help. You could encourage them to set up a home delivery scheme for their weekly food shop or medicines, or think about ways to make their home work for them – like lowering shelves or adding a rail to steps. You might also want to think about an emergency plan if they have medical needs or might be prone to falls or accidents in the home, such as giving a spare key to a neighbour, paying for a Carer or signing them up for a personal emergency response system (PERS).
